Mount Merapi Eruption 26-10-2010

At Wednesday evening this week I had dinner with some friends in the Suka-Suka Warung. Topic number one was the upcoming eruption of the volcano next door, Merapi. Still, it seemed not to affect us at all. Though a bit more dust than usual was in the air.

At the same time in a small village on the bottom of Merapi mountain. The villagers having their evening prayers, no chance for the police and military to evacuate the region before the prayers are finished. Unfortunately and ironical the time for the prayer was the same time when a pyroclastic ash cloud rushed down the volcano.

30 km away, in the Suka-Suka Warung, we could hear some ambulances passing on the main road straight towards Kaliguran/Merapi. In the background, on the TV  the first picture of victims and evacuation were running. Again, everything seemed so far away. The idea of people loosing their homes made everybody sad, but nobody actually imagined what we were going to witness the next morning!
